Valheim 1.0 cheats and console commands still let you flip on god mode, fly, and spawn a fully geared loadout from nothing. Since the 1.0 release on 9 September 2026, most of them also flag your character and world as cheated, permanently locking that save out of all 53 achievements. This guide covers enabling the console, the full command reference, and exactly what each one costs you.
Valheim left Early Access on 9 September 2026, and the console came out of it with a new price tag attached. The commands themselves work much as they always did, but 1.0 added an achievement system, and using most of the developer commands now marks your character and your world save as cheated for good. That is the single most important thing to understand before you type anything, so it comes first here rather than as a footnote. Everything below is checked against Iron Gate’s own 1.0 FAQ and developer-mode documentation first, and against the community wiki only where those are silent.
Cheating Now Costs You Every Achievement
Valheim 1.0 shipped with 53 achievements, 37 of them visible and 16 hidden until you trigger them. Iron Gate’s official FAQ is blunt about what happens when you start using the console: “There is a system in place to prevent achievements from being unlocked if you have cheats enabled.” Most developer commands, spawn very much included, place a flag on your current character and world save that permanently locks both out of achievements. Permanently means what it says; there is no documented way to scrub the flag off afterwards.
A few details make this less brutal than it sounds. Not every command trips the flag, and freefly is named in the FAQ as an explicit exception, so lining up a screenshot costs you nothing. Since 1.0 the game also shows a confirmation prompt before it locks your save, which exists precisely so you do not do this by accident on the character you care about. Achievement tracking only began when you downloaded 1.0, so whatever you accomplished across the Early Access years does not count toward anything, and any character that used the affected commands before 1.0 is already marked.
The contamination goes further than the character that typed the command. Spawned items carry the flag with them, so a clean character who picks one up becomes temporarily ineligible while it sits in their inventory. That state is reversible, and eligibility returns once every cheated item has been thrown out. Hammer-mode counts as a temporary cheat in the same way and blocks certain achievements while it is active.
Mods sit in the same territory and deserve a warning of their own. Iron Gate offers no official mod support and stated ahead of launch that it could not guarantee any mod would still function at 1.0, so a modded install is neither covered by the rules above nor promised to work at all.
The practical answer is the obvious one: keep two worlds. Run your real playthrough clean, and do your testing, staging and experimenting in a separate throwaway world where the flag costs you nothing. If you have no interest in achievements at all, ignore everything in this section and carry on.
What Valheim Is
Valheim is a Viking survival and exploration game from the Swedish studio Iron Gate, published by Coffee Stain Publishing. You play a fallen warrior dropped into a procedurally generated Norse afterlife and sent to hunt down its Forsaken bosses across biomes that climb from the gentle Meadows to the frozen Deep North. The 1.0 release on 9 September 2026 ended an Early Access run that began in 2021, added the Deep North as the final biome, and brought the game to Steam on Windows, Linux and Mac, the Mac App Store, the Humble Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with crossplay between all of them.
The console commands below let you reshape that world, which is useful for testing a build, recovering from a bug, staging a screenshot, or skipping a grind you have already done three times.
How to Enable the Developer Console
On PC the console is switched off by default, and how you turn it on depends on where you play. Once enabled, you open it in-game by pressing F5. There is also an Enable Console toggle under Settings and then Gameplay, which is the quickest route when you can find it. Iron Gate documents the Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and Mac App Store routes below; the GeForce Now method after them is a community workaround rather than anything official.
- Steam: right-click Valheim in your library, choose Properties, and in the General tab find the Launch Options field. Type
-consoleinto it and close the window. - Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass: open the install folder (usually
C:\XboxGames\Valheim\Content), right-clickValheim.exeand create a shortcut. Open the shortcut’s Properties and add a space followed by-consoleafterValheim.exein the Target field, then launch from that shortcut. Iron Gate also documents a one-off route: open a Command Prompt and runstart shell:appsFolder\CoffeeStainStudios.Valheim_496a1srhmar9w!Game -console. - Xbox: the developer console is enabled by default, so there is nothing to switch on. Opening it is a controller shortcut rather than a keyboard one: LB + LT + Start, which is also how you open the console on a controller anywhere else. A great many guides, the community wiki included, still tell you to hold LB + RB + Menu and then press A. Iron Gate’s own developer-mode page does not, and it is the one to trust.
- macOS, App Store version: open Terminal and run
/Applications/Valheim.app/Contents/MacOS/Valheim -console. For something you can click rather than retype, Iron Gate suggests wrappingopen -n -a "Valheim" --args -consolein an Automator Run Shell Script application. - GeForce Now: use Steam Family View, which is the parental-controls feature rather than game-library Family Sharing, to reach the Steam client inside your session, then set the launch option using the Steam method above. This has to be redone every session, because the settings reset when the session ends.
PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 are new platforms as of 1.0, and Iron Gate’s developer-mode page documents no activation method for either. It specifies that console mode is on by default for Xbox consoles and says nothing at all about the other two. Treat console access on PlayStation and Switch as undocumented rather than confirmed absent.
Turning Cheats On with devcommands
Valheim’s console has three layers, and knowing which is which saves a lot of confusion. Player commands need no cheats at all and can be typed straight into the chat window; type / and press Tab to see them. Admin commands are server-management tools that only work if your account is on the world’s admin list. Cheat commands are the actual cheats, and they require one extra step.
To switch cheats on, open the console, type devcommands, and press Enter. Type it again to switch them off. This is the command that replaced the old imacheater, so any guide still telling you to type that is out of date.
Two limits matter. Cheat commands work only in single-player or a world you are hosting yourself; they do nothing on a dedicated server, where only the host’s admin commands apply. And cheats are disabled the moment you join someone else’s world, so you cannot carry them onto another player’s server. Before you start experimenting, make a copy of your save. Some commands have messy side effects, and a backup turns a disaster into an inconvenience.
For heavier tinkering, type debugmode after enabling devcommands. This unlocks the creative-mode hotkeys covered further down, including free building with no workbench or resources.
How to Spawn Items
Spawning is the command most people come for. The syntax is spawn [item] [amount] [level], where the item is the English ID of the thing you want, the amount is how many, and the level is the quality or star rating. The amount and level are optional, and item IDs are case-sensitive.
For thirty iron bars you would type spawn Iron 30. For a single level 3 iron sword you would type spawn SwordIron 1 3. If the entity name ends with a star, the command spawns every entity containing that name, which is a fast way to make a mess. Spawned items do not land in your inventory; they appear on the ground beside you.
One warning worth taking seriously: spawning very large quantities at once, or high-level creatures that drop a lot of loot on death, can freeze the game while it processes the drops. Creatures at level 10 and above are the usual culprits. Spawn in sensible batches, and if the ground around you turns into a junkyard, removedrops clears every loose item in the area.
Essential Cheat Commands
These all require devcommands to be active. Enter them without the brackets.
god: god mode; keeps your health at 1 even when a hit would kill you, making you effectively invincible.ghost: enemies ignore you completely.heal: refills health, stamina and eitr.puke: clears your food, resetting hunger and removing food buffs.fly: toggles fly mode, the same as pressing Z in debug mode.nocost: toggles no-cost mode, letting you build and craft without resources, the same as B in debug mode.freefly: detaches a free-flying camera from your character. This is the one command Iron Gate names as achievement-safe.ffsmooth 1: smooths free-camera movement; ffsmooth 0 resets it.tame: tames every tameable creature nearby.killall: kills nearby enemies and tamed creatures, but not players.killenemies: kills nearby enemies only.killtame: kills nearby tamed creatures only.aggravate: aggravates neutral creatures within 20 metres.addstatus [name]: adds a status effect such as Rested, Burning, SoftDeath or Wet; clearstatus removes all status effects, good and bad.setpower [name]: sets your current Forsaken power and resets its cooldown, for example GP_Eikthyr or GP_TheElder.exploremap: reveals the entire map; resetmap hides it again.pos: prints your current coordinates.goto [x] [z]: teleports you to the given coordinates.find [text] [pingmax]: locates matching objects and pings them on the map; pingmax defaults to 1, and raising it drops map pins instead. findtp [text] teleports you to the nearest match.recall [name]: teleports all players matching the name to your position, or every player if you give no name.players [number]: scales difficulty as if that many players were present; players 0 resets it.skiptime [seconds]: jumps time forward, default 240 seconds. This does not update object timestamps, so spawn zones, crops, fermenters, smelters and kilns can all stall until time catches back up.sleep: skips one day forward.time: shows the current time and whether sleeping is possible.timescale [target] [fadetime]: sets the speed of time up to 5x. A value of 0 pauses the game, and freefly still works while paused.tod [0-1]: sets time of day. 0 and 1 are both midnight and 0.5 is noon; tod -1 reverts to normal day-night cycling.wind [angle] [intensity]: sets wind direction from 0 to 360 degrees, where 0 is wind from the south, and strength from 0 to 1.0; resetwind clears it.raiseskill [skill] [amount]: raises a named skill; use All to raise everything, or a minus sign to lower it. resetskill [skill] sets a skill back to 0.resetcharacter: wipes all of your character data. Exactly as final as it sounds.hair [hair#] and beard [beard#]: permanently change your hair or beard. Entering either without an argument removes it altogether. model [0-1] switches between the two body types.setfuel [value]: adds fuel to all nearby fire sources, default 10, and will not overfill. Negative values drain them instead.forcedelete [radius] [name]: removes objects within a radius, defaulting to 5 metres and capped at 50. Players, tombstones, Valkyrie, locations, dungeons, Vegvisirs and the boss stones at the start temple are never removed.removebirds, removefish, removedrops: clear the corresponding clutter from the area.genloc: redistributes all unplaced locations.printcreatures, printlocations, printseeds: print active creature counts and levels, loaded locations, and nearby dungeon seeds.setkey [name], removekey [name], listkeys, resetkeys: add, remove and list global keys.dpsdebug: toggles a damage-per-second debug readout.save: forces an immediate world save.
env [name] forces a weather type and resetenv returns to normal. Documented values include Clear, Twilight_Clear, Misty, Darklands_dark, Heath clear, DeepForest Mist, GDKing, Rain, LightRain, ThunderStorm, Eikthyr, GoblinKing, nofogts, SwampRain, Bonemass, Snow, Twilight_Snow, Twilight_SnowStorm, SnowStorm, Moder, Ashrain, Crypt and SunkenCrypt. The Ashlands brought its own presets on top of those: Ashlands_Ashrain, Ashlands_Ashrain_Clear, Ashlands_Storm, Ashlands_Meteorshower, Ashlands_Cinderrain, Ashlands_Misty and Ashlands_Seastorm.
itemset [name] [keep] drops a premade gear set with matching skill levels. Documented sets include Meadows, BlackForest, Swamps, Mountains, Plains, PlainsBoss, Mistlands, MistlandsGear, MistlandsMage, MistlandsWarrior, Ashlands, AshlandsMage, AshlandsWarrior, AshlandsFood, AshlandsWeapons, AshlandsMedium and Fisherman. Without the keep flag, your current items are dropped first.
Valheim 1.0 also added a batch of commands that the community wiki has not caught up with, although they appear in the in-game help list: inventorysize, achievements, biomeinfo, altbiomes, findbiometp, repairall, cinematic and confirmcheats. Most are self-describing, with findbiometp teleporting you to a named biome and confirmcheats handling the confirmation step 1.0 put in front of the cheat flag. Run help in your own build for current syntax, because these are the least documented commands in the game.
Two commands permanently disable saving for the rest of the session, so keep them well away from a world you care about. location [name] spawns a location instance and kills saving, though location [name] SAVE does the same job with saving left intact. nextseed forces the next dungeon to regenerate on a new seed and also disables saving, with no equivalent escape hatch.
Player Commands You Do Not Need Cheats For
This layer is easy to miss, because none of it requires devcommands and none of it touches your achievement eligibility. Type / and press Tab in the chat window to see what is available, or help [page] in the console for the full list.
The genuinely useful ones are bind [keycode] [command], which binds any command to a key and will happily bind devcommands itself, along with unbind, printbinds and resetbinds. fov [number] changes field of view and maxfps [FPS] caps the frame rate. lodbias [number] sets draw distance on a scale of 1 to 5. nomap and noportals toggle those world modifiers, and setworldmodifier [name] [value], setworldpreset [name] and resetworldkeys handle the rest of the difficulty settings. filtercraft [name] and sortcraft [type] tame the crafting menu. resetknownitems, resetplayerprefs, resetsharedmap and resetspawn reset recipes, settings, shared map data and your spawn point respectively. ping, info, clear, die, respawn, tutorialtoggle and tutorialreset do what their names suggest.
Debug Mode Hotkeys
After devcommands, type debugmode to switch on creative hotkeys. Type it again to switch them off.
- B: free building, no workbench or resources required.
- K: kills nearby enemies, leaving tamed creatures alone.
- L: removes nearby item drops.
- Z: toggles flight; Space gains altitude, Ctrl brings you down.
- Ctrl + middle mouse button on the map: teleports you to the cursor location.
- Shift + C: sets the time to day.
Spawning and Stopping Events
Events are the scripted raids and attacks Valheim throws at your base. You can trigger them on demand with event [name], stop the active one with stopevent, and roll a random one with randomevent.
Commonly used event names include army_eikthyr, army_theelder, army_bonemass, army_moder, army_goblin, army_gjall, army_seekers, army_charred, foresttrolls, blobs, skeletons, surtlings, wolves and bats. The full and current list lives on the official wiki’s Events page, since events change as new content lands.
Item and Creature ID Reference
Use these IDs with the spawn command. This is a working subset of the most-used entries; the official wiki’s Item IDs page holds the complete list of every spawnable ID in the game, which now runs past a thousand entries.
Deep North, new in 1.0
These are the Deep North IDs documented since launch. They are newer than the rest of this list and were compiled by players rather than published by Iron Gate, though every one spot-checked for this guide resolved correctly.

Multiplayer and Server Admin Commands
If you run a server, a separate set of admin commands handles moderation and world settings, and they only work if your account is on the world’s admin list. The core ones are ban [name/ip/userID], unban [name/ip/userID], kick [name/ip/userID] and banned to list everyone currently banned. save forces a save, while setworldmodifier, setworldpreset and resetworldkeys adjust world difficulty and modifiers. Note that resetworldkeys does not reset gameplay progression keys.
The thing to remember is that the cheat commands above do not run on a dedicated server. On that kind of setup only these admin tools apply, and the regular player commands stay available to everyone from the chat window. If you want the full cheat toolkit, you need single-player or a world you host yourself.
A Word Before You Start
Cheats in Valheim are confined to your own world, so there is no risk to anyone else’s game. The risks are all to your own save, and there are now three of them worth naming. Achievements are the new one, and for most commands that loss is permanent on both the character and the world. Saving is the second: location without the SAVE flag, and nextseed under any circumstances, switch saving off for the rest of the session. Stability is the third, since overloading the world with spawns or high-level creatures can freeze it outright.
Copy your save before you begin, keep a separate sandbox world for the experiments, and the console stays what it has always been: one of the better ways to test an idea, recover from a bad bug, or enjoy the parts of Valheim you actually want to play.
